The Best of Argentina - 8 Nights Itinerary

“Argentina”... The word itself evokes images of sensuous tango, a glass of fine Malbec wine, a juicy steak and gauchos out on the pampas – not to mention Maradona and Messi. Though these classics alone make for a formidable wanderlust collage, there’s much more to this nation of boundless diversity. From the hustle and bustle of urbane Buenos Aires, to the 278 cascades that make up Iguazu Waterfalls in the subtropical jungle, to the sight of thousands of Magallanic Penguins covering a windswept shore — while not overlooking the thunderous crashing of Patagonia icebergs slamming into the sea like giant floating boulders — Argentina has it all. And all of this and more is what you will experience on this 9-day/8-night journey to Latin America's largest Spanish-speaking country. While the distance from this country’s capital city to its southern Antarctic region spans more than 2,000 km, the range of experiences you’ll discover here is no less far-flung and grandiose. But don’t feel overwhelmed by the distance between these travel hot spots; Surtrek’s “travel-experience experts” will assist you in executing this perfect Argentina tour itinerary for exploring the magnificent wonders of this vast and imposing nation.

Day 3
Buenos Aires – Punta Tombo Penguin Reserve – Puerto Madryn

AM: This morning you will be driven to the Aeroparque (a domestic airport) for your flight to the Trelew city airport. Upon landing, you will be met by your guide and accompanied to Punta Tombo, the largest continental reserve of Magallanic Penguins. This site astounds its visitors with its jaw-dropping landscape full of these birds, which come and go looking for theirs nests and chicks. From September to April, this reserve is visited by numbers of tourists. (To reach Punta Tombo, we will go along National Road 3 in direction to Rawson; after travelling for about 45 minutes and having passed Trelew itself, we will get to Provincial Route 1, which will take us to Punta Tombo). You shouldn’t forget to take photographs of the chicks swimming with their mothers in the pools that remain when the tide is low (in February).

PM: Following lunch (included), we will leave Punta Tombo along the same route we arrived until coming to Provincial Route 25, which will take us to Gaiman and old Welsh settlement that still conserves its traditions. Do not miss out on the Welsh tea. We will later leave for Puerto Madryn, where you can check in at your selected hotel.

Day 4
Puerto Madryn – Valdes Peninsula

AM: The Valdes Peninsula tour will begin early in the morning, after we leave for the Atlantic coast and reach the peninsula, where we will visit the Carlos Ameghino Interpretation Centre. This facility has an excellent and informative collection on the history of this specific area of the Patagonia, as well as exhibits that explain the ecosystems and the regional flora and fauna surrounding Puerto Madryn. This full-day tour of the Valdes Peninsula will continue to Puerto Piramide, a small traditional village on the south Atlantic shores of the peninsula. This site has begun to attract tourists as it is a great jumping-off point for spotting whales, which migrate to these shores from May through December. We will embark on a whale-watching cruise in the bay, where will get a privileged view of the magnificent Southern right whales in these waters.

PM: Today’s tour will continue to Punta Norte, an area of outstanding natural beauty with a wide range of both marine and land wildlife, such as sea lions, elephant seals and orcas. The tour then heads to Punta Delgada for some elephant seal sightseeing, and – if you’re lucky – some spotting of orcas. We will later return you to your hotel in Puerto Madryn.
