Awasi Atacama Hotel - 3 Nights Itinerary

Thumbnail Description: Though northern Chile's Atacama Desert is the driest, most desolate and most arid in the world, the landscape there will surprise you with its striking and awe-inspiring beauty. In this area, geological transformations have given birth to imposing volcanoes, salt flats and lagoons, while bodies of water emerge in the middle of the desert along with thermal pools, geysers and marshes. Hotel Awasi is situated in this privileged location, just a stone’s throw from the center of town – San Pedro de Atacama – where you're invited to visit the church, the museum, the fair, the picturesque local stores and get to know the people. Eight cabanas with pointed thatched roofs mimic the historic neighboring village. Meals served on the patio introduce surprising local flavors, while your private guide is ready to take you off-road to places tourists have yet to discover.  On this 4-Day / 3-Night tour, Awasi Atacama Lodge provides a series of “outings” so you can enjoy the magic of the Atacama geography, the silence of its landscape and the warmth of its people. These outing include:

  • 4x4 dessert excursions (full day & half day)
  • Hikes (full day & half day)
  • Mountain biking trails
  • Horseback rides
  • Other desert excursions, birdwatching, astronomic tours, and more

Each couple can program their outings according to their own rhythm and particular interests, and will be accompanied by an experienced guide willing to share their knowledge of the place and their own experiences.

Day 2
Highland Salt Flats (Full-day Drive)

AM/PM: Following breakfast, we will leave the lodge at around 9:30 a.m. on a 205-mile round trip 4x4 excursion through the Atacama Dessert.  Heading south, you and your personal guide will visit the towns of Toconao and Socaire (at an altitude of 10,600 FASL). Along the way, you will see various types of landscapes, including dry desserts, small oases, high-altitude vegetation and a mountain landscape in all its splendor. Intertwined with this scenery, you will also be able to spot llama-like vicunas and other wild species. You are likely to be surprised by the immensity and inhospitable beauty of the Tuyajtu and Aguas Calientes salt flats – where you will have lunch – with their turquoise colored ponds inhabited by wild ducks and flamingoes. You should return to the lodge at around 5:30 p.m., where you can relax beside the pool before dinner.

Day 3
Full-Day Hike (Machuca – Rio Grande)

AM: Following your daily breakfast “dining experience,” at around 8:30 a.m. you and your personal guide will go out on a hike that follows an old shepherd’s trail. Heading north from the lodge, after a 50-minute drive, you will reach the town of Machuca to begin your hike. You will start walking through green wetlands where families of llamas graze and that are the homes to various species of ducks and birds. You will continue your trek until reaching a place called Peñaliri, where you will find a couple of abandoned stone houses that will serve as an ideal restaurant for your picnic.

PM: After lunch, you will start a moderately challenging climb with the river below and at your feet a welcoming landscape of colorful mountains, immense ravines and the town of Rio Grande. Walking down to the town, you will pass fields of alfalfa, garlic crops and herds of llamas, sheep and lambs. We conclude our hike in the Rio Grande Church, where a car will be waiting to take you back to the hotel by 5:00, when you will be able to rest up after this marvelous and intense adventure.
