This 4-day/3-night Delfin II itinerary showcases the best flora and fauna that the Marañon and Ucayali Rivers in the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve. Note, though, that this tour varies somewhat based on whether the travel dates fall in the high-water/rainy season or low water/dry season. Daily excursions (at least one in the morning and one in the afternoon) may include but are not limited to kayaking in the calm creeks and lakes, swimming with dolphins, fishing for piranhas at sunset, skirting the riverbanks in search of playful creatures, birdwatching, trail walks, and visits to local communities to interact with the native people. Optional early birdwatching excursions before breakfast are also available for those who are up for the challenge!
• Low water season: June to October. Ideal for travelers that prefer to walk through the rainforest to discover its flora and fauna. Allows for more trail walks.
• High water season: November to May. Ideal for travelers that prefer to duck into otherwise isolated corners of the reserve onboard speed boats. Allows for more extensive exploration and access via water.

Plan to arrive in Iquitos on the afternoon flight from Lima arriving at 5:00pm. After arriving at Iquitos International Airport, you will be assisted by the guides and transported by bus for about 1½ hours to Nauta. Nauta lies between Iquitos and the Marañon River, where the Delfin I is waiting for you. Upon boarding the Delfin I your experienced crew will help you settle into your stateroom, and introduce you to their extraordinary vessel.
Just before dusk, as the Delfin starts its journey into the rainforest, the barman and staff will provide you with a wide variety of drinks and cocktails including Peru’s finest and most famous cocktail, the pisco sour, made of Pisco, a Peruvian grape brandy. Fine regional cigars will also be available. Dinner is served in the cozy dining room located at the back of the ship’s second deck. Aside from providing you with your first rainforest adventure, the Delfin is also a unique culinary experience, offering the best of Amazonian-Peruvian cuisine in a cosmopolitan gourmet setting. The chef prides himself in serving dishes in different styles and seasoned with a wide variety of herbs and spices, as well as exotic fruits.
After a delicious meal, head to the top observation deck where the guides will use charts and short videos displayed on the flat LCD screen to conduct a brief orientation, outlining details of your journey, including the places you will visit, the wildlife you will see, as well as a summary of the history and geography of the Amazon basin.
Finally, under the beauty of an Amazonian night filled with hundreds of stars or perhaps a full moon, and wafted by the gentle breeze of the rainforest, the multi-talented staff will entertain you with a little live music, while you enjoy an after dinner drink and the tropical Amazonian breeze.
AM: Fundo Casual: skiff exploration & jungle trail walk
On your first morning, we recommend getting up early to appreciate one of the most important zones of the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve. Early rising is always rewarding since wildlife is most abundant and active with the rising of the sun. The walk at Fundo Casual jungle trail will take you deep into the rainforest on terra firme (non -flooded forest) where your guide will point out the dynamic creatures and vegetation of the Amazon. Be sure to keep an attentive eye open for spotting surprises!
PM: Yanayacu Pucate: skiff exploration, paddle boarding & swimming with dolphins
In the afternoon, you will start cruising through the Yanayacu and Pucate Rivers, peeking into different creeks and lagoons. This is one of the best preserved and protected zones of the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve. Your guide will use his expert eye to pinpoint all the biodiversity of this region. Take a stand-up paddleboard out to truly absorb the beauty of the Amazon water. You will even have the opportunity to swim in the jungle river along with the famous pink dolphins.
AM: Amazon Park: catamaran journey & canopy walk
Begin your morning with an adventurous journey to visit a private natural and fishing reserve. To get there, you will walk through primary forest and paddle slowly through tranquil Tahuampa Lake, a black water lagoon with giant arapaima fishes (known locally as “paiche”). Early in the morning, a symphony of sounds will surely enchant your ears. Your destination will be a network of suspension bridges hanging high up in the treetops where you can explore the canopy at your leisure.
PM: Jacinto Lake or Nauta Caño Creek: skiff exploration, kayaking, piranha fishing & night safari
After a delicious lunch, visit Jacinto Cocha, a black water lagoon, or Nauta Caño Creek where you will have the chance to do some kayaking. Also, go fishing for the famous piranha, a delightful and challenging experience you won't forget! As night approaches, your guide will take you on a night safari in search of caiman alligators and night birds.
AM: San Francisco community: visit & market; skiff exploration & kayaking
Visit the San Francisco jungle community: On board skiffs, you will visit the community of San Francisco to meet local villagers who have called Amazonia their home for generations. You may step into a typical schoolhouse where the children will be very happy to have visitors. Then stop by an area to see the women of this community and their amazing arts and crafts market.
PM: Disembarkation, Rescue & Rehabilitation Center of River Mammals (ACOBIA) to learn about manatees and other threatened species en route to Iquitos airport
Back aboard the Delfin I. Please take note you will be disembarking after lunch in Iquitos so take the time to gather and pack your things. With heavy hearts, the staff will wish you farewell as you begin your departure. At the port of Nauta, the ground crew will be waiting to take you by your private vehicle back to the city of Iquitos, about 95 kilometers journey by paved road. On your way from Nauta back to Iquitos airport, you will visit the Rescue & Rehabilitation Center of River Mammals (ACOBIA). Here you will have the chance to meet and feed baby manatees and learn about these wonderful creatures and why they are on the endangered species list. There are also some other animals cared for by the center that have been rescued from capture for the intention of being turned into pets and other threatening conditions.
