The Napo Wildlife Center (NWC) is first-class in every sense: location, lodging, and both cultural and wildlife experiences. Let’s review one of the most popular Amazon lodge in Ecuador – a country blessed with cultural, scenic and biological diversities.
The Amazon is in itself one of the most biodiverse areas of the planet. Within this vast jungle, the Yasuni National Park is one of the richest. The construction is sited here; and it has one of the most privileged location of the National Reserve. The territory belongs to the Kichwa Añangu Community; as a matter of fact, the lodge itself is owned and operated by them. After a canoe ride from Coca (around 2 to 2.5 hours depending on the current), you arrive to Añangu Lake and the NWC greets you; you will immediately recognize its tall observation tower. The lake itself is already an attraction; it is home to hundreds of species – fishes, amphibians, reptiles, mammals, birds… It is also conveniently connected to excursion trails that lead deep into the rainforest.
The Napo Wildlife Center was built according to traditional architectural principles — but with all the modern conveniences. It consists of 16 luxury thatched bungalows, each with a private bathroom, insect screens, mosquito nets, and lakefront and forest views. It features a large open-air restaurant/dining area – not to worry about the bugs – with a well-stocked bar, a reading room and two observation towers. From up here, you will feel how small you are by getting a glimpse of the boundless “green sea”. The rooms – or rather bungalows – provide intimacy. You will feel as if you were the only guest in the middle of the jungle. Scary? We would rather say, thrilling and exciting.
Sites and activities at the Napo Wildlife Center Lodge are organized by the locals. The guide will thus be able to not only take you around, but literally share his or her views of what is most precious to them. But as a program, excursions include viewing from the ecological observation tower, parrot clay licks, birding, forest trail treks and canoe exploring. The excursions are held on various times of the day – early morning, afternoon and evenings – which will be determined according to the weather conditions and animal activity. Besides wildlife, it also offers visits to local communities and cultural workshops, such as the Guayusada – fun and kind of a ritualistic tea drinking event – and cooking classes. There are also shamanic ceremonies; however, we suggest you to arrange it privately with us. As experts not only of the NWC but the entire zone, we will be able to determine what you truly need in regards of this ceremony.
Arguably, the Napo Wildlife Center is one of the best lodges in the Ecuadorian Amazon. It’s convenient, authentic and insightful. We at Surtrek, however, would like to add some more details. Let us make it inspiring too! We could complement your expedition with other journeys or services. Book with Surtrek now; and find out how we could make this an even more exciting Amazon Safari!
