“Thank you again for making our holidays in Ecuador unforgettable. Both of us will definitely recommend Surtrek as well as Cuyabeno Lodge.”
AM: After breakfast at your Quito hotel, we will leave the city travelling along the Pan-American Highway over the Andean high plain through the “Avenue of the Volcanoes,” so-named by the famous German explorer Alexander von Humboldt for the presence of eight of Ecuador’s 10 highest volcanoes. Passing by many of these volcanoes, including beautiful Cotopaxi, we will travel via the market town of Latacunga and then Ambato ("the city of flowers"), towards the small indigenous village of Salasaca, well known locally for its handmade weavings. After a walk through the village, we will continue our journey to Baños, a small village famous for its thermal baths and basilica.
PM: A box lunch (included) will be served en route. Driving east from Baños along a dusty road, we will follow the Pastaza River through the valley of the same name, passing a number of waterfalls until we reach Puyo, a jungle town where we will stop to visit Omaere, an ethno-botanical reserve. Later, we will continue the journey to the Las Cascadas Lodge, arriving late afternoon or early evening.
AM: We will start the day with a breakfast consisting of the local fruits that underline the exoticism of the surroundings. Afterwards, we will hike to the beautiful waterfalls of Las Cascadas. The local guide, who will accompany you, will inform you about the plants and wildlife found in this pristine region, and, if you are lucky, you may see hummingbirds, bats, frogs and possibly armadillos. Take your swimwear because you’re sure to have a chance to take a dip in the natural pools below the falls.
PM: Later, we will visit a local community, where we will lunch and learn something about their projects. You will also have the option of participating in a replanting program aimed at preventing deforestation. When we return to the lodge, you can relax in a hammock on the veranda and possibly enjoy a well-deserved tropical cocktail. In the evening we will end the day around a blazing campfire.
Full Day: After breakfast, we will head out on our return journey to Quito. We will first drive for around two-hours to reach the Napo River, where we will go on a canoe trip to admire the flora and fauna of the area. We will also visit a farm that cares for injured wild animals and later returns them to their natural habitat. Later, we will continue our westbound journey to the Andes. Lunch (included) will be served en route. Passing the small village of Baeza, we will leave the jungle and gain height as we travel up the slope of the eastern Andes mountain range. In the village of Papallacta, you will have the opportunity to bathe in thermal hot springs. Later, we will follow the transoceanic highway through the Andean highlands to reach Quito in the late evening.
“We loved every moment of our trip and could not have done it without Ligia and Surtrek. I highly recommend them!”
